We had a day out on Anglesey this weekend. We’ve not had much luck on Anglesey before with weather and not really knowing where to go. We’ve heard lots of good things about Anglesey and our friends all love the place. It hasn’t really happened for us yet on Anglesey and Saturday was another disappointing trip.
When we set off from Llanddulas it was a beautiful sunny day, as we drove the skies got darker and darker. The drive to Anglesey is a real treat though with some great scenery along the way. I love the scenery near Penmaenmawr and Llanfairfechan with the dramatic cliffs and houses perched on hills. The views from those houses across to Anglesey must be spectacular.
We decided that we would keep on the A55 and drive right across Anglesey to Trearddur Bay. We’d heard good reports from friends and family about how nice it was. We arrived there at about 10:30 am on Saturday and the weather was miserable. The skies were dark, it was raining and it didn’t look like improving. I tried to park in a car park by the beach, but it looked more like a swimming pool. I managed to find a parking space on the road, I’m sure I wouldn’t have been able to do that if the weather was better.
The first thing we saw open we ran into to keep dry. This was the Sea Shanty Cafe, it looked great and has obviously had a lot of money spent on it. I like my ice cream and the front of the Cafe looks like an ice cream parlour with lots of flavours to choose from. We were seated towards the back of the restaurant. On the walls, there are lots of ‘medical like’ jars full of sand from beaches all over the world. I thought it was a really good idea, I’m not sure if the samples really were from the labels they had. Somebody must have done some serious travelling to fill those.
We then had to wait a good 10 minutes before being served. There seemed to be lots of staff around, but everyone seemed busy without actually doing much. I ordered a buffet breakfast which for £7.95 I didn’t think was too bad. Alison ordered pancakes and bacon, and we ordered a child’s buffet breakfast for Katie. We also ordered 2 cappuccinos which were OK but weren’t the greatest.
The good thing about buffet breakfasts are you can pick what you want, the bad is that the food is usually lukewarm. This was the case, and I have to take particular offence to the sausages. I like my sausages to be cooked so they are crispy and brown. These sausages looked like they had barely seen a grill or frying pan. I’m a bit fussy with sausages, I don’t like when they’re served stripey. When they’ve been grilled and have a brown stripe on top, pink on the sides and then brown on the bottom. These didn’t even make it to that level, they were just pink.
Alison’s pancakes and bacon then got sent to another table, I’m not sure how this happened because it wasn’t busy at all. The children’s buffet breakfast came with fruit juice and yoghurt. We couldn’t find any yoghurts so we asked and were told that they no longer served yoghurts. By this point, I was getting a little disappointed.
When the bill came, we were asked if we had enjoyed our meal. Alison pointed out the problems and it was just met with a sigh from the waitress. We don’t usually complain in restaurants but felt that since we’d been asked it was worth pointing out. It would have been nice to just get a ‘sorry’. I’m sorry but I have to give the Sea Shanty Cafe breakfast a rating of just ??
We got straight back in the car and drove home. We didn’t even go on the beach because it was still throwing it down. Maybe Anglesey just isn’t for us? If anybody has any suggestions or ideas where we can go to put this right then just let me know. I think we’ll try it again in the summer when the weather is better.
